The Latest Red Piranha News

After closing another fantastic month, we are excited for July and the new opportunities and challenges it brings.

While we are all aware that individuals and organisations must have basic cybersecurity practices in place, like using strong passwords and turning on multi-factor authentication, there are always a few slip-ups here and there. Sometimes, these slip-ups can cause a catastrophic chain of events, like the Medibank 2022 data breach, in which customer data worth 200GB was stolen. The court documents filed by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) allege that the breach stemmed from an employee of a Medibank contractor, an IT service desk operator, who saved his login details to a personal web browser installed on his work computer. This breach not only cost Medibank its reputation and 'loss of trust' among customers, but the health insurance giant will likely face a maximum fine of more than $21 trillion. Scroll down to read more about the Medibank breach.

Crystal Eye Software Management

In Red Piranha, security forms the core of everything we do, so our strategy was proactively oriented to software updating and borrowing practices from the mobile phone industry. This ensures that our customers get timely application updates and critical security patches, which are released monthly to improve defences against newly discovered threats. For high-severity issues, we offer urgent hotfixes out of the cycle to greatly reduce the window of exposure to vulnerabilities as they are discovered.

Aside from the regular patches and hotfixes, we also deliver major updates to the Crystal Eye OS which often include new features, significant application updates and core file upgrades. These major upgrades do require a minimal downtime of around 10 minutes in most cases, so this is a process managed by the system admin to allow coordination of outages.

What sets us apart is our easily reversible upgrade process to rollback into the previous version with a simple click of a button just in case which is a significant advantage over other products that require a complicated series of steps to prepare and revert to previous versions.

Red Piranha is your trusted security expert. We are committed to developing security capabilities in the Crystal Eye XDR Security Appliance suite to support your growing cybersecurity and risk management requirements.

Service Spotlight: Managed Detection & Response

News3

Being hailed as one of the biggest privacy breaches in Australian history, the Medibank cyberattack is a wake-up call for everyone.

In this breach, the attackers stole 9.7 million records which included names, phone numbers, dates of birth, Medicare numbers, and sensitive medical information of Medibank's current and former customers. Some records were even published on the dark web. The hackers accessed the Medibank networks using stolen credentials. The security incident occurred in August 2022, and the attacker stayed in the network till October 2022, when it got in touch with Medibank demanding a ransom of US$10 million. When Medibank refused to pay the ransom demanded, the hackers posted the data on the dark web.

The OAIC alleges that Medibank's EDR tool detected unusual activities, generating alerts that were not acted upon.

The Medibank breach is a stark reminder for organisations to be proactive in their cybersecurity approach.
